The Cornell Institute for Social and Economic Research, CISER is delighted to announce a collaborative effort with the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) of the German Federal Employment Agency enabling approved researchers to securely access confidential administrative microdata on labor markets. These resources are available to any researcher approved by IAB, no affiliation with Cornell is required.

Access will be available either from your campus office or in person at the IAB Research Data Center at CISER depending on the level of restriction.

your computer image Access to less restricted Scientific Use Files is available from your Cornell campus office. This is a unique resource available only through Cornell for any approved researcher.
CISER image Access to more restricted data on servers in Germany is through the IAB Research Data Center at CISER.

The data files contain detailed information on employment, unemployment benefit receipts, participation in labor market programs and registered job search, and a large number of socio-economic characteristics.

The following scheme depicts the different data sources and how they are combined in the available data products:

The most restrictive data (weakly anonymized) may be accessed in person at the IAB Research Data Center (IAB-RDC) located in CISER’s offices at 391 Pine Tree Road. Access to confidential administrative microdata is provided through a thin client connection directly to the IAB servers in Germany. In addition to Cornell University, the University of Michigan and University of California, Berkeley are the only other locations outside of Germany where this access is possible.

Access to the IAB’s less restrictive confidential microdata, referred to as Scientific Use Files (SUF), is now available. These files are similar in origin to the highly restrictive files but have been factually anonymized enabling wider access. Approved researchers will be able to use CISER’s remote access virtual data enclave to access these files from their campus offices through secure computing accounts using remote desktop connections from their PC’s.
